BGMI banned: The hugely popular Battlegrounds Mobile India smartphone game has been banned in India as both Google and Apple have removed the BGMI game from their respective app stores. Having said that, if you already have the game installed on your smartphone then you will still be able to play the BGMI game till the time the government forces Krafton– the developer– to shut it down entirely.
After one of India’s most popular mobile games, was removed from the Apple and Google app stores, game developer Crafton on Friday said it is clarifying why the BGMI app was removed from the Apple and Google apps.
“We are clarifying how BGMI was removed from the Google Play Store and App Store and will let you know when we get specific information,” the company said in a statement to zee Business.’
According to a Reuters report, a government circular said the ban came as a result of concerns over BGMI sharing data with China. The government initially blocked public access to 118 apps in 2020 using Section 69A of the Indian IT Act. It used the same law to ban Battlefield Mobile India. However, the government has not publicly commented on the confidential Article 69A.
Google has confirmed that the app has been removed following an order. “Upon receipt of the order, following the established process, we have informed the affected developer and blocked access to the app available on the Play Store in India,” a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying by BGR India.
BGMI is the Indian version of PUBG Mobile, developed and published by Krafton, specifically for players in the country. The game was released on July 2, 2021 for Android devices and August 18, 2021 for iOS devices after the government banned PUBG along with other Chinese apps due to national security concerns.
Apple removed the app from the App Store on Thursday after receiving a government order. Earlier this month, the game developer announced that its BGMI had surpassed 100 million registered users. It also said that BGMI has completed one year of being the most loved game in India. Over the past year, the game developer has invested nearly $100 million to develop local video game, e-sports and entertainment startups in India to build a healthy gaming start-up ecosystem.
BGMI is the biggest eSports title in the country and India has grand plans in this arena. It is still not clear if the game has been banned indefinitely or if this is just a temporary takedown.
Earlier, BGMI introduced some new elements in gameplay in order to address the violent aspects of the game. For instance, the red blood splatter, while shooting an enemy was changed to green, and the word ‘Kills’ was replaced with ‘Finishes’. While these were some minor changes, for the most part, the game continued to offer a similar experience.
